AI carbon emissions methodology

How TheAIMeters estimates CO2e emissions associated with AI electricity consumption.

Last updated:

What this indicator measures

This indicator estimates carbon dioxide equivalent emissions associated with AI-related electricity consumption.

Calculation method

The calculation estimates AI electricity use and applies emissions factors to approximate CO2e. The displayed counter is then interpolated between server refreshes.

Simplified formula

CO2e emissions ≈ AI electricity use × emissions factor

Data sources

The model may use public grid emission factors, research papers, operator disclosures and AI infrastructure assumptions.

Known limitations

Emissions depend on geography, time of day, power purchase agreements, renewable matching and grid carbon intensity. This should be read as a global approximation.

Refresh and interpolation

The baseline is refreshed periodically. Between refreshes, TheAIMeters applies a calculated CO2e rate per second.
