How many AI models are available today?
There is no single global registry that counts every AI model in the world. This page tracks publicly available models through Hugging Face, which provides a useful proxy for how many AI models are out there in the open ecosystem.
What counts as an AI model?
A model entry may include a base model, fine-tune, embedding model, classifier, experimental checkpoint or task-specific machine learning model.
Why this number matters
The number of public AI models is a useful signal for open AI activity, developer adoption and the pace of experimentation across the machine learning ecosystem.
How this counter works
This counter currently uses the latest public model snapshot from Hugging Face as a proxy for the open AI model ecosystem. It should not be read as an exact total of every private, internal or unpublished AI model in the world. For details, see the Methodology.
